This is a car that is really interesting in many ways. I will try to cover a much as I possibly can in this article, so that you can get the best feeling about how this car really is. The VW golf 3 model is one of the earlier really exciting VW models in my opinion besides the VW golf 1 GTI obviously!
It is not a car on the bad quality steroids like its big brother Golf 3 GTI. Instead it has its head cut off. Oh wait… roof I mean. The thing about the missing roof, is what makes this particular car much more interesting than the GTI model from my perspective. The VW golf 3 cabriolet is close to be the PERFECT budget cabriolet car on the market and a very funny, cheap yet not very costly investment object. The golf 3 cabriolet should be seen as a car you can use for every purpose other than racing on track against supercars and hypercars of course. But that is up to you, to find out.
The car has such a great charisma involved in it which makes you feel very enjoyed almost all of the time the roof is down. It is simple, not extremely powerful with either a 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 liter engine stretching from 75 horsepower to 115 horsepower, but still enough power in all of the different engine sizes to enjoy the full potential of the car. the model was first introduced in 1993 and was replaced by the newer model VW golf 4 in 1999. It has all the features a classic charismatic car should have. The engines and especially the gearbox are very good. It makes the use of the manual gear very enjoyable.
To compensate for the lack of power VW haven’t really done anything, but the solution comes from a natural part. Can you guess it…? That’s right, the weight of the car! Back in the 90’s, the car companies wasn’t focusing on safety like today and that made the cars generally lighter because not as much heavy metal went into the production of the car. An easy way to spot this is to look at the door of your car, and look at a similar one from 20 years ago. The difference is huge. The doors of the car where a lot slimmer back then. This tendency goes all over the car. Therefore the VW Golf 3 was naturally light and that means it is fun to drive even though the engine aren’t that powerful.
If we look at the more negative parts, we will find some typical problems with the electrical parts and minor mechanical parts. Those things are not so expensive to get fixed since there has been produced a lot of spare parts by VW back in the days due to the popularity of the VW golf 3 in general. The only major problem you should look for is rust. It can be very costly and shall always be in the back of the head, when you’re looking for this car and cars that are this old in general. Especially if you are looking for one in a area where they are salting the roads at winter. Look for on with low millage if you want to make the best out of the car, but that is also increasing the price when purchasing it. Investment wise it might not be up there with classical Ferraris etc. But I still think it will rise in price at some point. I think I will get this cult status especially for the youth and people are still young and want a bit of flash yet still a practical solution to the everyday use. It got some California vibe to it with it’s simple looks and the VW logo out in front. They start from around 500 Euro on the Mobile.de and then increase in price from there. So it is one of the cheaper upcoming “funny collectives” out there, you should go invest in!

It is easy to maintain especially if you’re living in warmer area, then rust will not be a problem for you. The engine is not the most effective and still use some petrol but not so much it will ruin your bank account. It shall be seen more like a funny purchase that in the long run will turn out a little bit of money but something you can retire on after selling it. That is due to the large amount that has been produced and that is not VW best ever model produced. But it is a funny, cool and great little investing project for the general investor and user that want the car a bit more than the money, is my overall judge.
